Commuter Alert: Foods to Avoid While Driving E-mail
Written by Jeff Behar, MS, MBA

In today's fast paced world people are often busy and on the go. One bad eating_drivinghabit that can put people at risk is eating and drinking while driving. An Exxon survey of 1,000 drivers found more than 70% of drivers eat while driving and 83% drink beverages. Eating while driving is one of the biggest distractions that contribute to unsafe driving and vehicle crashes.

A study by the National Highway Traffic Safety (NHTSA) Administration and the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute indicated that 85 percent of crashes and 65 percent of near-crashes involve driver distraction. Distraction was most likely to be involved in rear-end collisions in which the lead vehicle was stopped, as well as in single-vehicle crashes," according to the NHTSA.

According to Insurance.com, the following 10 foods should be avoiding while driving to minimize distractions while behind the wheel:
  • Coffee. Coffee tops the list as foods to avoid while driving because coffee is hot, and even with a travel lid, hot coffee can find its way out of the opening when hitting a bump.

  • Hot soup.  Like coffee, hot soup is also a food to avoid while driving because it is hot. Many people drink hot soup like coffee, which can result in a spill, burning you and distracting you from the road. This is why hot soup is a food to avoid while driving

  • Tacos.  Tacos is also a food to avoid while driving because tacos can disassemble. The mess can cause people to take their eye off the road.

  • Chili/Chili dogs. Chili and Chili dogs are both foods to avoid while driving because they are both hot and can be very messy. That can distract and cause an unsafe condition.

  • Hamburgers. Greasy hands and a steering wheel do not mix. The messiness can lead to the temptation to lick fingers, taking hands off the wheel. This is why hamburgers are considered a food to avoid while driving.

  • Barbecued food. Barbecued food is messy, can get all over the car and steering wheel. All of these issues make barbecued food a food to avoid while driving.

  • Fried chicken. Fried chicken is greasy. The fact that this food is also known to be finger lickin' good also can tempt people to lick their fingers, taking hands off the wheel. Greasy hands, wet hands, and a greasy steering wheel do not mix.

  • Jelly or cream-filled donuts. Jelly or cream-filled donuts can be messy, and can leave sticky fingers, coating the steering wheel. All good reasons as to why Jelly or cream-filled donuts are considered foods to avoid while driving.

  • Soft drinks. All drinks are a potential source of spillage. Whether hot or cold drinks spilling while driving can cause people to take their eyes off the road. For this reason, all drinks should be considered a food to avoid while driving.

  • Chocolate. Chocolate is messy. It melts on your fingers. This can cause your hands to stick on the steering wheel. For this reason chocolate rounds out the list of the top 10 foods to avoid while driving.

Eating and drinking are just one of the most dangerous things to do while driving. Bottom line, it is always important to keep your eyes AND mind on the road while driving to reduce your risk of crashing
